Earthwork - Clear & Grub, Import,  Overexcavate and Recompact
Earthwork is the first activity that provides the prepared place for the project.  The plot of land for the
project is usually not to the proper elevation,  compaction or graded for drainage.  The earthwork
activity can involve importing dirt to raise the site or exporting dirt to lower the site depending on the
requirements of the project  The pictures and descriptions below show the basic activities involved in
the earthwork operation
Earthwork - Clear and Grub
The plans and specifications will call for the removal of the top six to twelve inches of the site to remove
the vegetation that has grown.  The dirt contains organic materials that are not suitable for use in
foundation of structures.  It can, however, be used for areas such as landscape areas, parks,
playfields, etc...  The material can be hauled off or stockpiled onsite for use later in the project.
Earthwork - Import Material
The items shown below are to possibilities for loading trucks to bring dirt to a site.  The same can be
used for hauling excess dirt from a site.

The first two photos show a large loader taking dirt from an offsite location and placing the dirt into the
trucks.  The loader stays in the same location and the truck pulls forward to load the next trailer.

The same process applies in the next two photos where an excavator is being used to scoop the dirt
from the pit directly into the truck.  Both methods involve one scoop per trailer.

The final photos show the trucks at the jobsite.  The trailers are "bottom dump" trailers meaning that
the bottom opens as the trucks are moving and deposits the dirt in a line where needed.

Water trucks are constantly wetting the dirt and graders are spreading the dirt into place
