Building Foundations - Concrete Masonry Units
Building Foundations for Concrete Masonry Units are similar to foundations for the
standard framed walls with one exception.  The rebar for the masonry extends from the
foundation to accept the masonry which ties the two together.  Foundation and rebar
layout is crit
ical to the overall layout of the building.

Technical Information - Foundation Excavation and Reinforcing Steel
1&2)  Layout of foundations starts with staking and then the installation of batter boards.  The batter
boards protect the staking and allow a point to pull strings to line out footings
3&4)  The foundations are then chalked tor painted to allow for excavation by a backhoe.  A grade checker
confirms the depth of footing with a laser and laser eye.
5&6)  Foundations are complete and excavated ready for reinforcing steel
7)Rebar templates are installed in the foundations to provide a means for installing and supporting the
rebar in place until pouring concrete
8&9)Rebar is delivered and stockpiled at the site prior to installation.  There are tags on each of the
bundles identifying where they are to be placed.
10, 11, 12) Rebar is installed in the foundations
13, 14, 15)  Rebar installed in place prior to concrete pour  13 shows a break in the CMU dowels for a
doorway.
